Spy Week!

This week the First Grade Dragons were contacted
by a certain "Agent Shelly" .  She chose our class to participate in a week of spy training. She gave us multiple missions each day.  We had to work together to decipher codes, solve mysteries, get through obstacle courses, and write and read messages in invisible ink.

Here is one of the videos we received from Agent Shelly.  Very mysterious!

Here the trainees are using light to read secret messages...

They needed to hone their balance and coordination in a faux laser obstacle course.

Here is one example of the many codes the Dragons were challenged to crack!

Here they are making cipher wheels to crack yet another code...

The Dragon were presented with many challenges...and they rocked them all.  Here they
are with their spy certificates.  They are now known as the First Grade Dragon Spies.

Feeding Birds in the Winter

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day our school spent the day in service.  We made toys
and treats for the animals at Stray Hearts animal shelter and bird feeders for the wild
birds looking for food in winter.

We Love Animals

The First Grade Dragons took some time
this week to reflect on "Why Animals Make Our Lives Better". We read books about animals, told stories, and made drawings.  On Thursday, we were lucky to have two amazing storytellers visit our class!  Silke Markowski, who was one of the founders of the Waldorf school in Taos, and our very own Audrey Martinez of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo.

Here are some of the drawings....

Silke Markowski enchanted the kids with her drumming and her stories of growing up on a farm in Germany.

Audrey Marinez, or Pin Povi (Mountain Flower), told us about her grandmother, the Deer Dance, and the culture of respect of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo.

The Dragons go to Santa Fe!

The First Grade Dragons got to visit two
museums in Santa Fe.  Thank you to Miss Jutka and
her kindergarten class for inviting us on this
awesome trip!  We started off our artistic journey at
the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.  So fun!
Thank you to Pam Bishop for the beautiful photos!

I'm not sure if you can tell from this picture, but Keenoh just won at Post Modern Art.  When asked to draw a landscape in the O'Keeffe Museum, he chose the electric boxes on the wall.  Awesome.

After a tour of the museum, we headed to the Education Annex for some hands on art activities!

After lunch and a trip to the Plaza, we headed to the New Mexico Museum of Art.

We played sculpture freeze in the courtyard...
Hilarious and beautiful.
